Overtime deduction questions

Schedule 1-A Part III, FLSA eligibility, premium-only math, and reporting.

What is a “no tax on overtime calculator”?
It estimates how much overtime premium you may deduct under IRS Schedule 1-A (No Tax on Overtime) as a federal income-tax deduction. Social Security and Medicare taxes on overtime still apply. This tool applies the annual cap and MAGI phaseout for an educational estimate — it does not file a return or guarantee a refund.
Is qualified overtime the same as my total OT paycheck?
No. Qualified overtime compensation is the amount above your FLSA regular rate (the half-time premium on time-and-a-half). If your regular rate is $20/hr and OT is $30/hr, only $10/hr is the premium. Ten OT hours → $100 qualified, not $300.
Is my hourly wage the same as the FLSA regular rate?
Not always. Under the FLSA, the regular rate can include nondiscretionary bonuses, commissions, and certain other pay — so it may be higher than your posted hourly wage. The deductible premium is 0.5 × regular rate, not 0.5 × posted wage. Pasting your OT rate into the regular-rate box overstates the premium. If you only know your posted hourly wage and have bonuses, choose “Simple hourly estimate only” and treat the result as estimate-only — or use Mode B with a pay-stub premium.
Does state-law or company-policy overtime qualify?
Generally no — only overtime required under federal FLSA §7 is Schedule 1-A deductible (CRS). If your answer is No or Not sure, this calculator shows $0 rather than a false positive deduction estimate.
How does the MAGI phaseout work?
If your MAGI exceeds $150,000 (single / HoH / QSS) or $300,000 (MFJ), the deduction is reduced by $100 for each full $1,000 of MAGI over the threshold (floor division). The deduction cannot go below zero.
Can married filing separately claim this?
Generally no — married taxpayers must file jointly to claim the No Tax on Overtime deduction. This calculator marks Married Filing Separately as ineligible. Confirm with current IRS instructions.
Does this cover 2025 and 2026? What about W-2 reporting?
Yes for tax years 2025–2028 (same MVP caps/thresholds; statute sunsets after 2028). For TY2025, employers may not separately report qualified OT on the W-2 — taxpayers may need Schedule 1-A instructions to reconstruct the premium from pay stubs. Prefer Mode B / “OT premium” line; Mode A is a last resort.
Do Social Security and Medicare still apply?
Yes. This deduction is for federal income tax only. FICA (Social Security and Medicare) taxes on overtime still apply.
Is this affiliated with the IRS or TurboTax?
No. This is an independent educational calculator from NoTaxOTCalculator. It is not tax advice, not filing software, and not affiliated with the IRS, Intuit TurboTax, or any government agency.
Is overtime pay completely tax-free?
No. The federal provision is a deduction for qualified overtime compensation, not an exemption for every dollar of overtime pay. Overtime can still be subject to federal withholding and Social Security and Medicare taxes.
How much overtime can I deduct?
For overtime, the annual cap is generally $12,500 for Single, Head of Household, and Qualifying Surviving Spouse filers, or $25,000 for Married Filing Jointly. The available amount can be reduced by the MAGI phaseout and eligibility rules.
What is the MAGI income phaseout?
The phaseout begins above $150,000 of MAGI for Single, Head of Household, and Qualifying Surviving Spouse filers, and above $300,000 for Married Filing Jointly. This calculator reduces the estimate by $100 for each full $1,000 above the applicable threshold.
Does the calculator include state taxes?
No. NoTaxOTCalculator provides a federal income-tax estimate only. State and local rules may differ and are not included in the result.
What filing statuses does the overtime calculator support?
The calculator supports Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately, Head of Household, and Qualifying Surviving Spouse. Married Filing Separately is treated as ineligible under the current Schedule 1-A rules used by this estimator.
What is W-2 Code TT?
For tax years where it applies, W-2 Box 12 Code TT is used for qualified overtime reporting. It is not the same as total overtime wages and it is not your final tax savings. Always compare the information on your tax documents with current IRS instructions.
Why is tax still withheld from my overtime paycheck?
A deduction claimed on a tax return does not necessarily stop payroll withholding during the year. Overtime wages can still have federal income tax withholding and FICA taxes applied. The final deduction is determined when the return is prepared.
Can I claim the deduction if I take the standard deduction?
The qualified overtime deduction is generally available whether you itemize or take the standard deduction, assuming you meet the applicable eligibility and reporting requirements. Confirm the current rules before filing.
Can I use the calculator for double-time or unusual overtime?
Mode A is limited to a simple FLSA time-and-a-half estimate. Double-time, daily overtime, seventh-day overtime, bonuses, commissions, and unusual payroll arrangements may require a different regular-rate calculation. Use a reported qualified premium in Mode B when available and verify complex situations with a professional.
Does the calculator calculate my exact refund or tax bill?
No. It estimates a possible Schedule 1-A deduction. It does not prepare a complete tax return, calculate every credit or deduction, or guarantee a refund, tax savings amount, or final tax liability.
What information should I have before using the calculator?
For overtime, have your filing status, tax year, FLSA eligibility answer, regular rate or reported qualified premium, overtime hours, and estimated MAGI. For tips, have your filing status, tax year, qualified tips, and estimated MAGI. Your actual tax documents take priority for filing.
Does NoTaxOTCalculator provide tax or financial advice?
No. NoTaxOTCalculator is an independent educational project, not a tax-preparation service and not a provider of tax, legal, accounting, or financial advice. The creators are not certified financial advisors. Consult a qualified professional for advice about your situation.
What happens to the information I enter?
The calculators run in your browser and do not ask for an SSN, tax-account login, uploaded tax documents, or account credentials. Do not enter sensitive personal information into the calculator.
Where can I verify the rules?
Use the IRS Schedule 1-A form and instructions, IRS qualified overtime and tips guidance, and current Department of Labor FLSA information. The overtime calculator also links to official sources below its methodology explanation.

Tips deduction questions

Schedule 1-A Part II, qualified tips, caps, phaseouts, and FICA.

What is the No Tax on Tips deduction?
Schedule 1-A Part II lets eligible workers deduct qualified tips as a federal income-tax deduction, subject to a $25,000 annual cap and a MAGI phaseout. Social Security and Medicare taxes on tips still apply. This calculator estimates that deduction for educational purposes only.
Is the tips cap different for single vs. married?
No — the tips deduction cap is $25,000 per return for both single and married filing jointly. MAGI phaseout thresholds still differ ($150,000 vs. $300,000).
How does the MAGI phaseout work for tips?
Same method as overtime: if MAGI exceeds the threshold, reduce the deduction by $100 for each full $1,000 over the threshold (floor division). Deduction floors at $0.
Do I need a tipped occupation?
Yes. IRS guidance limits the deduction to tipped occupations. Check the IRS tipped occupations list and Schedule 1-A instructions. This tool does not validate your job title.
Do Social Security and Medicare still apply to tips?
Yes. This deduction is for federal income tax only. FICA (Social Security and Medicare) taxes on tips still apply.
Can married filing separately claim the tips deduction?
Generally no — married taxpayers must file jointly. This calculator treats MFS as ineligible.
Is this tax advice or TurboTax?
No. Independent educational estimate only from NoTaxOTCalculator — not affiliated with the IRS or TurboTax, and not a substitute for professional tax advice or official forms.
Educational estimate only. The phrase “no tax on overtime” or “no tax on tips” does not mean wages are completely tax-free. Verify your result against current IRS forms, instructions, and actual tax documents before filing.
